Trying Out A Marital Separation

There is no doubt about it, almost all married couples come to a point where they ask themselves why they even got married in the first place. Generally this comes about around a fighting period and the thought is know to fade as quickly as it came about. But for some people, that thought lingers and sticks around making them extremely confused. They may love the other person but find that their problems are just too bad to deal with anymore. Sometimes, problems look smaller if you view them from outside the relationship and that is why some people try a marital separation.

Before jumping into a divorce and throwing away years of marriage, you should really consider trying out a marital separation. Some people find that just a few months of separation allows them the time and the space to see things from a different view point. And then all of the sudden, they are ready to jump back into their marriage full force. For other people though, they may go through a marital separation for a few years before they are ready to move ahead in their marriage to one another.

If It Does Not Work

If the marital separation does not work, then most people end up heading to the divorce court as their next step. This is a sad moment most of the time, but for some people it is their chance to move on with their lives, as neither one has any feelings of hurt or hatred left in them. Through the marital separation period they were able to let all of that go and were able to make peace with things. While divorces in general are a sad moment, it can also be looked at as a birth of a new stage in a life and that is something to look forward to.

Though this is extremely rare, it has been seen that those who divorce after a marital separation end up back together in a few months or a few years. Couples have even gotten remarried after going through all of that. While this would be an pretty expensive way to go about staying in a relationship, to each their own. As long as the two people are happy, then that is all that matters when it comes down to it. Marriage or divorce, it does not really matter as long as everyone is safe and happy.

When There Are Marital Problems

There does not seem to be any marriage that is safe from a fight here and there as we are all only human and we are bound to not always see eye to eye. But when it’s a daily fight or lies taking place, then you are seriously looking at marital problems. Marital problems are nothing to be ashamed of as more people then you realize are suffering from the same issues. The only difference between people is who is going to acknowledge it and who is going to hide from their problems.

Some couples experience marital problems very early on in the marriage while others seem to be able to make it twenty or thirty years without a problem then all of the sudden they are having really bad marital problems. It seems that it can either be a total freak onset of problems that seem to come out of nowhere and then other times, it seems like the problems were waiting in the dark all along. It is extremely important to address these issues if you want to be able to work through your problems.

When Enough Is Enough

There are a few people that will say that there is never a case where enough is enough but most people do not agree. There are situations that are dangerous for one person to stay in, especially if there are children involved. While some marital problems consist of money fights and issues of not having enough individual space, others are much more serious. If the marital problems you or someone you know ends up being something where you fear for your life, it is time to get out. Even if it is temporary until the problems are resolved, you need to remove yourself from the situation.

Only then should such major marital problems be looked at and even then there are no promises that the marriage can be fixed. Sometimes, enough is enough and there just is not much more that you can do about it. When you think that the marital problems you are experiencing are over the top, make sure that you talk it through with friends, family and a professional like a counselor. Make sure that you protect yourself first and then you can work on other issues from a distance. But no one will get better and the marriage cannot be saved if there are issues beyond your control.

Finding The Right Marital Counseling For Your Relationship

A marriage doesn’t have to be close to death in order to benefit from marital counseling. in fact this kind of counseling can be beneficial to those in healthy relationships by helping to keep them that way.

With the rise in marriages year after year, and an even higher rise in divorce, marital counseling is so popular that doctors and professionals have figured out multiple ways of delivering the counseling. Not all available options are right for everyone, so it is important to understand the different options that are available, and whether these options would be right for your particular marriage.

Standard Marital Counseling

This method of counseling has been tried and tested over and over again, and is probably the only method that can work for all relationships. Although seeing a marital counselor can be costly, the end result is well worth it. You should be able to determine whether marital counseling will work for you and your relationship within the first few visits and if not, the counselor can offer advice for getting further relationship help.

The choices are wide in most places when it comes to finding a martial counselor, so it’s a good idea to make initial appointments with several choices to give yourself and opportunity to ask a lot of questions and find the right therapist for you. Not all therapists are well matched for every client, so keep this in mind and don’t get discouraged if your first few choices aren’t the right ones for you.

Counseling Online

Marital counseling online is subjective to each individual. Some think it works wonders, while others say it doesn’t work at all. It really all depends on your situation and how big your relationship problems really are. If you’re getting help late in the game, seeing a standard marital counselor is probably a better choice for you. If problems have just started arising or they’re not yet serious enough to think about ending the relationship, online counseling may very well work for you.

If you do decide to use online marital counseling techniques, it’s important to know that these programs will not work unless you follow them exactly as prescribed. It will take self discipline and the commitment of your partner in order to make this happen, but it can be well worth the time and work put into it.

Self Help

By establishing marital counseling on your own terms, you have the freedom to decide what will work best for you. Like online counseling, the self help method will take lots of discipline and commitment in addition to the need for research in order for self counseling to be effective.

If you choose the self help method for marital counseling, reading books designed to make it happen is essential. Some suggested reading follows:

  • The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work: A Practical Guide From the County’s Foremost Relationship Expert- Paperback, written by John Gottman and Nan Silver.
  • Hope Focused Marriage Counseling: A Guide to Brief Therapy- Hardcover, written by Everett L. Worthington.

In fact, most marital advice that you get in therapy sessions is really common sense. Any old couple that has spent several years together can give you some sound marital advice.

Agree To Disagree

Some of the best marital advice that you will ever get is for you and your spouse to agree to disagree with each other.  Why? You and your spouse are two individual persons so you two need to uphold your individuality. Forget about that marital advice that you read or head on TV about couples being one in thoughts and in actions all the time. If you force your spouse to think the way you do or if your spouse forces you to think the way he or she does, you will both be in trouble. If you want your marriage to survive, you need to give each other some breathing space. There are times when you and your spouse must agree with each other and there are times when you have to disagree too. Disagreeing with your spouse’s ideas does not mean that you do not support him or her. Healthy disagreements are very important in a marriage because this means that you and your spouse are talking and communicating with each other.

Learn To Make Concessions

Marriage is a give and take relationship. You need to learn to make concessions to your spouse. Always remember that it takes two to tango, so if you want things to move along smoothly give in to your spouse every now and then. Giving in to your spouse’s wishes every now and then does not really mean that you are giving up your individuality but rather it is all about sharing and giving.

Uh Oh, The D Word!

When you got married, you were the happiest person alive. You finally found someone who understood you, who made your stomach flutter every time you saw them, talked to them and spent time around them. You finally found someone you could see spending the rest of your life with. That was true love. You were married, you went on your honeymoon and everything was great. Then, something changed. Now, you can’t stand that person. Just the sight of them makes you sick. Their quirks that you once found cute make you nauseous and you can’t wait to get out of this marriage that you once held so sacred. This is how divorce happens. But why is it so prevalent?

The Divorce Rate

Why is the divorce rate so high in this country? What happened to the days of old when people stayed married until death do they part? What happened to the times of your grandparents, who never would have thought of uttering the D word? They were married and that was it. They lived happily ever after. Sure, they had their problems but they worked through them. They were a team, they were one unit, and they did everything together. Something has truly changed, however, since their time. Now, divorce is all too common. The divorce rate is nearing fifty percent and it’s only getting higher. The reason may be due to several reasons.

We Live In A Different World

We live in a completely different world than our grandparents did. Today, people are living much longer. That could be the reason why marriage till death do you part seems so scary. Another reason why the divorce rate is so high is because there’s a lot of temptation out there. People become too comfortable with each other and the newness is gone. Then, another person comes along and gives them the attention they so desperately wish they still had. This can cause a person to stray. However, the biggest reason the divorce rate is so high is because it has been made very easy.

Divorce Lawyers

Next time you’re on the highway, look up at the billboards and count how many lawyers are posting advertisements for getting people out of their marriages. In fact, one billboard received national attention because it depicted a half naked man on one side and a half naked woman on the other and it said something to the effect of, “Life’s too short. Get a divorce.”

This was for a lawyer’s office and it was hardly professional but it’s a great commentary on the world we live in. Nothing is permanent anymore. Marriage may be an outdated concept. People live longer, there’s more competition, more temptation and people have less morals than they once did. Is love dead? Is marriage dead? Is divorce the way to go? No, it’s not. Stick with your marriage. Get counseling. Fight the urge to stray and try your hardest to remember why you married that person in the first place. The feelings are still there, you just have to uncover them once more.
